چکیده

Observations of jets from quasars and other types of accreting black hole are briefly summarized. The importance of beaming and γ-ray observations for understanding the origin of these jets is emphasised. It is argued that both the power source and the collimation are likely to be magnetic in origin, although the details remain controversial. Ultrarelativistic jets may be formed by the spinning hole and collimated by a hydromagnetic disc wind. Progress in understanding jets has been handicapped by our inadequate knowledge of how magnetic field really behaves under cosmic conditions. Fortunately, significant insights are coming from solar observations, numerical simulation and laboratory plasma experiments. Some possible, evolutionary ramifications are briefly discussed and it is suggested that it is the mass of the black hole relative to that of the galaxy which determines the eventual galaxy morphology.

Are Quasar Jets Matter or Poynting Flux Dominated?

If quasar jets are accelerated by magnetic fields but terminate as matter dominated, where and how does the transition occur between the Poynting-dominated and matter-dominated regimes? To address this question, we study constraints which are imposed on the jet structure by observations at different spatial scales. We demonstrate that observational data are consistent with a scenario where the ...

A newly identified kiloparsec-scale X-ray jet in the high-redshift z=3.89 quasar 1745+624 is studied with multi-frequency Very Large Array, Hubble Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray imaging data. This is only the third large-scale X-ray jet beyond z > 3 known and is further distinguished as being the most luminous relativistic jet observed at any redshift, exceeding 10 erg/s in both the radio a...

Effect of the temperature profile of the accretion disk on the structure of jets and outflows around protostars

Magnetic fields play an important role in creating, driving, and in the evolution of outflows and jets from protostars and accretion disks. On the other hand, the temperature profile of the accretion disks may also affect the structure of the magnetic field and outflows. In this paper, we use the self-similar method in cylindrical coordinates to investigate the effect of the temperature profile...

Jets in Quasars

In my review of jet phenomena in quasars, I focus on the following questions: How powerful are jets in radio-loud quasars? What is their composition? How are they launched? And why, in most quasars, are they so weak? I demonstrate the exceptional role that blazar studies can play in exploring the physics and structure of the innermost parts of quasar jets.
